Roof lower/rise motor has to be disengaged before you can lower/rise it manually, so if it works manually the motor will not work until it is engaged again. My own E36 convertible plays up sometimes, I have had it looked at at a BMW specialist and they tell me it is because the elastic strips within the roof are tired and sometimes the rear
These things are a nightmare, the bosses wife had an e36 cab and we were forever fecking about with it. There is a way to reset them, i have the BMW dealer manuals here that has the procedure which solved the problem in the end although it had to be done every few months.

If you have an E36 convertible and one day find that the tonneau cover does not close all the way down and also hear a grinding or knocking noise, then you

Common Peugeot 207CC hard top and convertible roof problems. We service a full range of faults, simply let us know in the contact form or give us a call. Boot lid catch does not release or you are unable to access boot area. Boot/tailgate not lifting correctly. Convertible roof is stuck open/shut.
I have a 95 E36 328i convertible imported from Belgium, where I worked for a few years. I have just tried to put the roof down cos its a really nice day and I want to clean the car properly, and nice days dont happen than often in Aberdeen, Scotland. I undid the latch just above the mirror, as usual, but when I tried the switch, nothing happened.
Just pull the orange tab under the rear seat. Then you can open and close the roof manually. 1. The tonneau cover (the lid of the top) wont close shut and be loose. 2. If the top is down, you wont be able to open the boot (unless you have a friend/heavy object to press the cover down to activate microswitch)
I have a 1999 BMW E36 and while I was away on Holiday the car Battery went flat. Since that time the Convertible roof no longer works I do not get any of the red flashing lights on the switch. I had to open the Trunk (we call it a Boot) with the key so I could get to the battery to charge it would this have caused the roof to stop working or
I have taken off the convertible top seven (7) times now. I've replaced the tension straps twice making sure to mount the straps so they are not too tight. I am reasonably certain they are not the problem. I can't seem to find a solution to the issue of the convertible top motor straining to close. It will travel to a point and then stop. I've been having issues lately with my 1999 E36 323i Convertible and I was hoping someone could help. Ok, first signs of problems were 6 months ago, the functionality of the fully automatic hood was intermittent. Sometimes the roof would fold down OK, and other times nothing would happen at all when the button was pressed, not even a flashing
Hi all, I have a BMW E36 318i from 1996. It is a convertible and the windows seem to have a problem. When you open the doors, the windows drop about 20mm. The motors are working and it does drop but the window only drops about 10mm. I have replaced the window runner clips and this didnt help at all.
E36 - 318i, 323i, 325i and 328i: The top design consists of two pivoting sections; the tension bow at the rear and the foldable top section with multiple bows. When lowered, the top is stowed in a storage well behind the rear seat. The well is cov-ered by a hinged convertible top cover.
